Teen Transformation

A Parent's Guide to the Years When Everything Changes

Here is what you can do on this page:

INTRODUCTION:
Teen Transformation is written by a teacher and school leader who has spent thirty years in the daily company of teenagers, thousands of them, watching both sides of the kitchen-table conversation up close. It is not a theory of adolescence. It is a set of scripts.

Nineteen chapters. Nineteen things teenagers actually say.
Each chapter opens with a real teen voice, drawn from large surveys of young people, and explains what is happening underneath it. Then it gives you three scripts: the 30-second sentence for the moment at the door, the 5-minute conversation for the kitchen, and the 30-minute conversation for when it is time to go deeper. Every script comes with the lines that close the door, so you can stop using them.

Four parts, one system.
• The Listening Contract — why teens stop telling you things, and how to become the person they tell first.
• Confidence and Identity — the Confidence Bank, the inner critic, and the teenager who says "I'm just not confident."
• Discipline and Study — the 5-Move Setup, the Lock-In Protocol and the Past-Paper Grind: study systems built from the research on retrieval practice, spacing and procrastination, written so a teenager will actually use them.
• The Hard Days and the Long Road — spirals, sadness versus depression, identity, friendship, the phone, purpose, and the conversations you have been avoiding.

Written for both of you.  Half of every chapter speaks to the parent; the other half speaks directly to the teenager, so the two of you are reading the same map. A companion workbook turns each chapter into a seven-day, fourteen-day and thirty-day plan, with observable signs of change at each mark.

Grounded, not preachy.  More than 300 references to research in adolescent psychology and learning science sit behind the scripts, and a clear referral guide tells you when what you are seeing is bigger than a book. There is no guilt in these pages and no quick fix. There is a way back into the room.

If you have ever stood outside a closed bedroom door and not known what to say, start here.

Testimonials for Teen Transformation

These are actual reviews from the Amazon website about the book:
What really stands out is the approach to conversations. Having examples of what to say, what to avoid, and how to approach situations differently depending on the moment is incredibly helpful. I also love that the book considers the teenager's perspective rather than focusing solely on the parent's frustrations.

If you’re a parent or guardian and you feel something is off, something isn’t working. You feel you can do more but don’t know what to do or say? You can stop right here. Having a teen is worst than what we faced in the terrible 2s. This book offers ways to communicate effectively , ways to keep your teens from crashing out, from lashing out gives you the chance to be there as a parent.

A very helpful book that is backed by research and offers some very helpful tips and exercises to better understand your kids and build better communication with them. Building trust is incredibly important with teens and this book is very helpful in helping parents to come back to the place of understanding of their kids and working on the long-term healthy relationship and communication on a variety of topics. Definitely helpful to have as a resource.
