 The Long Spoon Framework

  1. What is the book about?
    Title: The Long Spoon Framework™
Subtitle: A short book about a long spoon and how to tell what something is worth.
Facts: It is a 50-60-page (depending on the format) description of how the idea of a useful and "charming" object (the spoon!)  can inspire a quality cheking system - a framework that helps you decide whether a person, concept or plan is worth your time. It is also a mini-autobiography. And it is an AI-based book writing experiment.
  2. What "Framework" are you talking about?
At the end of this book, there are 2 Worksheets. They are TWO sets of 20 Yes/No questions (40 in total) that allow you to get a score of "usefulness". This is a very simple, powerful and shockingly honest look at yourself, others and all kinds of ideas, concepts, businesses, and anything you need to make a decision about. The ONLINE QUIZ helps you to do it on your phone. Go now.
  3. Where can we get this book?
It is exclusively available through Amazon, but if you sign up for the Quiz  - to check your SPOONtaneity - you will get access to a comprehensive set of tools to enrich your reading experience.

Lourens Breytenbach

Hi, my name is Lourens. I am a Teacher and I live in a city named Roodepoort (it translates as "red gate" - from the original Dutch) near Johannesburg in South Africa. Born and raised here in the old Transvaal Province, renamed to Gauteng (place of gold). I am 55 and single (never married) and I do not have children.

I wrote this book in one week. Actually, it was formed as one unit in a single afternoon, and it did not take very long to get it all down on "paper" - I had a robot or two who helped me. And one of them interviewed me - you can read our conversation in the book.

It is available in paperback and Ebook (kindle) formats on Amazon.

The Long Spoon Framework™ Origin Story

The following is the Introductory note from the actual book:

This is a small book about a small object, and it was assembled in an unusual way, so it seems only fair to say how.
The man at the centre of it is Lourens Breytenbach. He teaches, he helps run a large public high school, he writes books and makes videos at night, and he owns a teaspoon he is unreasonably fond of.
Over the course of a few long conversations, some of them with an artificial intelligence and some journalling, he worked out why he was so fond of it, and the answer turned out to be a way of thinking about people, and about the things people make. He then agreed to sit for five difficult questions about it, and to be the first person tested by his own instrument.
I am not Lourens. I am the person telling you the story. Where you see his words set apart on the page, they are his, taken from the transcripts and tidied only enough to be read without a cup of coffee going cold.
Where you see mine, I am doing what a narrator does, which is to keep the thread and stay out of the way. A warning about tone. Comparing a human being to a piece of cutlery is a slightly silly thing to do, and this book knows it. Lourens knows it best of all. He is fond of quoting the small boy in The Matrix who tells Neo, with total calm, that there is no spoon.
Lourens has a name for that idea: accepting the ghost (from his Proprietary Framework and Philosophy named The Dark Matter Halo Framework™) and it means roughly this: the things we invent to think with are not real but they work anyway. The spoon is a way of seeing. You are allowed to laugh at it. You are also allowed to use it.

The Quiz

I have created the concept of SPOONtaneity - the degree to which your "Long-spoonness" stretches (or that of your idea/person/thing you are measuring). I used the worksheets from the back of the book to create a special quiz for you.

✔️ It takes only 5 minutes and is a lot of fun to do.
✔️ Simple YES or NO questions guide you through it.

When you are done, the quiz will show you your result and send you right back here.
