The Teacher's (Boundary) Phrasebook
Fifty phrases for those moments you were never trained for
Here are 4 examples of what you can expect
Before walking into the worst class
“I am the adult in this room. I do not have to win. I just have to lead.”
Say this to yourself, in the corridor, before opening the door. It lowers your heart rate by reminding you of your actual job.
The colleague who undermines you in meetings
“That's an interesting take. Let me explain my reasoning, because I think there's a piece you may not have seen.”
Don't fight in the meeting. Defend your reasoning calmly. The room remembers composure longer than it remembers content.
The learner who shuts down completely
“You don't have to talk right now. I'm going to keep working with the class. When you're ready, I'm here.”
Pressure makes shutdown deeper. Presence without demand opens the door.
The boundary-setting WhatsApp
“Hi [Name] — just letting you know that for work-life balance, I respond to school messages between [hours] on weekdays. I'll pick this up on Monday. Thanks for understanding.”
Set the boundary once, in writing, professionally. After it's set, you can rely on it without re-explaining.
